ABOUT ME
My background is in Education, having earned degrees in both English Language and Literature and Secondary Education. I started teaching English / Language Arts: first for grade 8, then for grades 9-12. I’ve continued my education in diverse fields of study, earning a J.D., an M.A. in Educational Leadership, and an M.S. in Interactive Communications. I’ve always brought what I’ve learned in these programs back to the classroom, and the knowledge has provided students with additional lenses through which they view their community, and with various critical thinking skills with which they can work to solve problems.
WHAT I'VE DONE
As a teacher, my focus has been on introducing students to literature with themes, characters, and ideas they may be unfamiliar with, showing them how the world around them is diverse. We discuss how choices influence one’s future, how characters are often judged on appearance and/or reputation, and how difficult it can be to succeed when the initial impression one gives incites a negative reaction in another. Through various methods – discussions, research, writing, presentations – my students have been asked to think critically about these ideas in literature, and explain how each is reflected in their community.
WHAT I DO
Combining my diverse skill set – education, law, administration, and social communication – I can help students create a positive personal brand as they begin high school. Using the social tools they are familiar with, students can approach the technology with more of a recognition of how “media” in “social media” can work for them. I can guide them in creating an innovative, positive impression online, one that puts them in a place closer to reaching the personal goals he/she has set. It’s not your average profile.
